QUEENSLAND has won their second game of the 17/U and 9/U National Netball Championships with the third round 33-17 victory over Tasmania, relegating the hosts to their second loss of the tournament, on Saturday morning.
Possession efficiency was key to Queensland’s success early on day two with the hosts guilty of conceding the ball in a combination of errant passing and committed defending from all seven players on court.
Leading 11-5 at quarter-time, Queensland took control of the fixture in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 9-4, which included six consecutive goals, to assume a 20-9 advantage at the main break.
Tasmania brought their goal drought to an end late in the second quarter with determination and a stroke of luck after a pass into the circle rebounded off the post before a series of shots and rebounds culminated in their ninth goal of the game in the shadows of half-time.
A Tasmanian comeback was made even more difficult with Queensland restricting the hosts to just 13 shots for the second half resulting in eight goals while the visitors pulled further ahead with a 15 goals half to finish 16-goal winners.
Coach Hilary Collins played 10 of her 12 player squad with Maddison Bowyer (C), Mahalia Cassidy (C), Bianca Cattelini (GA), Hulita Haukinima (WD), Josephine Hungerford (WA), Leah Middleton (GK), Kristen Oxenford (GD), Ruby Paton (GS), Briony Payne (GS) and Aldora Tuala (GK) taking the court.
Ruby Paton continued her great shooting with 89 percent with 16 goals from 18 attempts, Bianca Cattalini shot at 75 per cent with nine goals from 12 attempts and Briony Payne shot at 80 per cent with eight goals from 10 attempts.
